Medicare Trailer – Beware!

A New Form of Identify Theft

In Colorado, a “Medicare” trailer  is setting up in communities to answer questions about Medicare. The trailer moves on to other communities, but not before the trailer’s “staff” has gotten personal and financial information from their unwitting victims under the pretense that the victims’ files have to be updated. No money or service is being requested so this is a case of identity theft.

Fraudulent Telemarketing of Medical Alert Services

Marketers have been placing unsolicited phone calls to seniors to pressure them into buying medical alert services, which supposedly allows the consumers to receive help during emergencies by pushing a button on a pendant.

Even thought consumers have refused to purchase these services, they are receiving numerous letters in the mail demanding payment for the unwanted services along with abusive follow-up phone calls. Some individuals are even receiving packages in the mail containing unordered medical alert pendants.

If you have information about such a medical alert service scheme, please contact Artie DeCastro at the Federal Trade Commission at 202.326.2747.
